Intellectual Property

How do copyrights, trademarks, and patents work and why are they important?

You can’t protect your ideas itself, but you can protect an expression of an idea. To receive the copyright protection, your idea has to be in a fixed form like a book, photograph, or a recorded song. Once you create an original work you own the copyright, but to protect your work and from others stealing it, you need to officially register it with the federal government.

Trademarks have more to do with business than creativity. The idea behind a trademark is to protect the goods and services between brands. By selling your products and services you do have some rights, but the main reason for trademarks is to prevent confusion between business, brand, and logo names. You can do that by officially registering the business, brand, and logo name. Your original trademark also can stop others from selling goods and services with similar trademarks.

Patents are all about innovation. There are two types of patents, utility patent and a design patent. A utility patent protects the way something works and the design patent protects the way some looks. To get a United States patent you must be the first to apply for it. Just cause you are the first to invent it doesn’t mean that you can get a patent for it. The best way is to apply for it and then invent it. The application that you need to fill out is called a provisional application which is then put on hold for up to one year.

What is your opinion of the 3D printing article and Napster video?

As far as the 3D printing article, I feel that it is a violation of LEGO’s copyright and trademark protection act. Like they are trying to make their packaging and name like LEGO’s one so people buy it thinking that it is a LEGO brand.

In today’s day and age AND technology, everything you want and need is just a click away. As far as Napster is concerned, they should have researched and taken the proper precautions before starting Napster and they should have known that they needed permission from various companies and individuals to be providing music FREE to everyone. Should it have been teenagers, college students, or whomever? It doesn’t matter.

But then again, from the users’ point of view and the prices these days, everyone has to look for whatever they can get for free. So I definitely would have done the same thing if I knew about it I would have been one of those users, no doubt about that. In fact, at the moment I do use a service that provides free internet music, so I have to say I will side with the users.

Should Napster had brought the music industry on-board before he started, I truly believe that they both would have benefitted. Unfortunately, someone else had taken the Napsters idea and turned around and got on board with the music industry so they wouldn’t close them down too. That is why I said, they should have done their research before starting up.

How would you feel if your intellectual property was shared, copied, or edited without your permission?

If any of those things were done to me, I probably would feel violated just like the music industry did. I probably would have also done the same thing too and take Napster to court, not only to save my business and profit, but mostly for my reputation and the musicians.

Social Media Nightmare

by Christine Gaudette

A brief explanation of the types of social media tools available today…

BIGO LIVE – Live Stream

Livestreamer rewards narcissism, has adult content.BIGO LIVE lets teens stream live video of themselves that other users can see and comment on in real time

BIGO has a lot of mature content, including sexy talk and clothing, and users’ comments are often predatory and explicit. Also, its focus on status and spending money, as opposed to creativity and talent, makes it feel shallow.

BitLife – Life Simulator

While kids can’t engage in actual risky behavior, BitLife exposes them to mature ideas. As your character gets older, you can choose to “hook up” with the pretend profiles, drink, do drugs, gamble, and commit crimes.

HOLLA: live random video chat

Video-chatting with strangers can be risky for teens. When it’s paired with location, it’s a no-go. Also, while HOLLA supposedly bans iffy content — like nudity and violence — user reviews indicate that masturbation, fake identities, and negative comments are common.

These are just a few apps that our children are using today. Just imagine what else is out there that they have access to. Do you know what apps your child(ren) are using? Don’t you think it is a good idea that you find out? Do you think they are familiar with the danger of using certain apps? Don’t you think it is a good idea that you make them aware?

In August 2019, WGRZ-TV reported that there are 15 apps that parents should know about due to the fact that it is dangerous and/or unhealthy for our minors to be interacting with. Social media may be the greatest thing today because we are in this pandemic situation, but it is the most dangerous time. The reason I say this is because there are certain individuals that do not have anything else better to do with their time but screw with people. They screw with people in many different ways. They don’t just screw with our children.

Should I have not watched this video of WGRZ-TV news, I would not have even thought of all the risks there are with social media. I really am grateful for this class because I have learned so much and like I said before, if it wasn’t for this class, I would have dropped out of school because I am more of an on-hands learning type of person, not an on-line person. Taking this class was the best decision I have ever made besides having God in my life.

There is an app that I am guilty of using besides the ones I use for school and everyday life and that is Facebook, which I use to send out God’s word every morning. This is not only to get the word out but to encourage others that may be struggling in their walk of sobriety. The walk of sobriety is a struggle that is REAL and incurable, but mangable.

There was an experience I had recently because I decided to try and comment on someone Facebook post and when I did I guess I hit the wrong page and ended up posting the comment on my son’s Facebook page and oh…it almost made a big huhu. It’s a good thing I thought my children to speak up, ‘cause if I didn’t it would have been a disaster. Anyway, he called me and asked why I put that on his Facebook page and I informed him that it was supposed to have been for another person’s page. Thank God!!!

Social Media

by: Christine Gaudette

I chose to write about how Waiahole Poi Factory uses social media because they have promoted their business, I believe, to the fullest. No one can say they have not heard about Waiahole Poi Factory if you live in Hawai’i. They advertise on the radio, the television, and on the internet.

That is the three main social media to advertise if you want the world to know about anything. Their strategy to be know is great, just like their food. In fact, their food is better!

Waiahole Poi Factory is a Hawaiian Restaurant that is located on the Windward side of the island of O’ahu that promotes traditional Hawaiian food that promotes to the island community that wants to eat real Hawaiian food.

The types of strategies that they use to promote their business are on social media via the website, www.waiaholepoifactory.com. They also have a commercial on television and t-shirts. Go and check them out, it will be worth it!!!

Digital Communication

by; Christine Gaudette

Technology in the hands

What is Digital Communication? Digital communication is any exchange of data that is transmitted in a digital form. How much of digital communication affects you and your life today? How much did it affect your life 20 years ago? It is a major difference, from then until now, won’t you say? Yes, the digital technology has revolutionized communication in the world today. It has rapidly integrated into most of our lives that some of us can hardly remember how to use a regular phone, what they used to call “land line“.

Remember how the regular phone could just call only one person? After that, it advanced to calling two people at once, putting others on hold, and so forth? Now, we can do more than just call a person or two or three. The phones today, called ‘cellular phones‘, can call multiple people at once, video chat, text message, messenger, and much, much more. The phones that were used for just calling people, now it is used for almost everything you can imagine such as texting, video chats, school (classes), research, banking, etc.. Computers, cellular phones, and tablets are the primary source of our communication today.

Digital Communication has become essential due to this corona virus situation that we are faced with today. Many of us cannot communicate without it because we need to connect with work, school, friends, so forth. With this stay at home order that is in motion, we as human beings need to interact with others in order to stay sane. Some more than others, but we must stay connected and the digital communication world has provided us with that.

In addition to pointing out the impact this technology has done for us in this time of the corona virus, I’d like to take a moment to “Thank ALL the workers that has put their lives on the line to help others and keep the world going” without those workers we really would be up ______ creek without a paddle. “Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart“.

Not everyone has access to this digital communication technology, but with many reaching out to help with this unexpected situation, there are many more that have been connected that otherwise would not have been. There has been so many free of charge acts that have been going on, such as free internet for anyone. I just think that is so awesome.

Getting back to the subject at hand, Digital Communication, there is a video attached that gives you some history of who is believed to be the creator of technology, the Father of the Information AgeClaude Shannon.

Watching this video and thinking about all that is going on today really makes me think about what the future holds for not only myself, but for my grandchildren, great- grandchildren, so forth. The creativity and possibilities this digital communication world has to offer is enormous, like the saying goes, “Sky is the limit”. That is how I see it.

Now, let us take a look at the chart below;

Growing up in the 60’s, yes, I am guilty of growing up when there was just a rotary type of phone. When it took so long just to dial a number, then it advanced to the push button, and then it started getting fancy. We had only one telephone company to service all the Hawaiian islands which was called HawaiianTel, they started what they called “wonderphone”. That is when we could make two calls and then a while later, three-way calls which were called ‘conference calls’, we could even put a call on hold and call another person.

That was big for us back then, we were fascinated with it for a while. Then they came out with beepers. Talk about feeling a certain type of way…back then, if you had a beeper (pager) people used to look at you as if you were someone important. Sounds funny, but that’s how it was.

When Howard Higa founded Honolulu Cellular…oh my goodness…it was just grand. We just had to have that big bulky phone.. That must have big bulky phone, you know the one that did not fit in your pocket nor could not lose because it was so BIG, you know the first cordless. That was not the first cellular, the ones in the cars were, they used the same concept as the “CB” radios used for the phones in the car which was called the ‘mobile phone’

There was a friend of mine that could not hold her phone with one hand because her hands were too small, honestly, I think it was because the phone was too BIG. Apparently, Howard thought so too because eventually Honolulu Cellular came out with a skinnier, but not shorter, just skinnier phone. Which was great because my friend could hold the phone with one hand without a problem.

Today, phones are all kinds of shapes and sizes that can easily fit in pockets and unfortunately, easy to lose. These digital communication devices we have today have somehow turned into a necessity, part of our everyday lives. Most of us would not know what to do if we didn’t have our device(s). Really, what would happen if just one day something came along and put a crunch on digital communication such as this coronavirus has put on each and everyone of our lives? What would we do? How would we communicate? Just think of that, I mean seriously. For real this entire world would be up _____ creek without a paddle.

Maybe, everyone should learn to appreciate and be respectful of each other just like everyone should learn to respect and appreciate technology. Embrace the fact that technology is here to stay for a long while. Maybe not forever, but it is possible.

My advice to students that are attending Leeward Community College – Wai’anae Moku that are struggling or are technology (computer) illiterate as I was, to take this class (ICS 101). I have learned so much, learn how to use many different programs, learned how to protect myself (systems), computer terms, and much more. Even if you are not struggling, I suggest that you take this class. You most likely will learn something.

Personally, I am very grateful to be taking this class especially because of the situation we are in. Having this pandemic take me out of my comfort zone of face-to-face classes to online classes has made me appreciate this class even more because if it wasn’t for me taking this class, I definitely would have dropped out because I wouldn’t know how to even hook-up to the classes. Thank you goes out to my Professor for informing me last semester to take this class.

“The Virus Changes the Way We Internet.”

by: Christine Gaudette

How has the virus changed the way you use the Internet and technology? It has definitely changed the way I use the internet alright, from having face-to-face classes to online classes. The reason I took face-to-face classes was that I learn better hands-on and now we are forced to do our classes online.

Most of the Professors have provided great support to help us adjust to this hasty change. The reason I say most is that before this virus situation a professor was willing to help us but when the breakout came she let everyone know that we need to find help somewhere else, tutors and so forth. The tutors were not available until days later if you could get an appointment or response from a tutor. That means, my grade will not be as good as it could have been, And the changing of an online class is another thing, one-week zoom, and the next hangout. Then it was supposed to be at a certain time and at the last minute changed to another. It’s bad enough we are having a hard time adjusting, then we got to deal with that, that’s crazy.

Have your personal internet activities changed? Most definitely my personal internet activities changed, which I actually am very grateful for. Before this virus situation, it didn’t even cross my mind to video chat, nor did I know about Zoom. All of this is pretty new to me, but I must say, I am very grateful to be taking this computer class at Leeward Community College-Wai’anae Moku, for without it, I probably would have dropped out of ALL my classes.

Has the virus changed the way you communicate for work and school? Yes, with this stay at home order in place and almost every place closed digital communication is the only way to go if we want to succeed with school and to continue working. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to take their jobs online because of the line of work field they’re in.

How do you like learning exclusively online versus in a traditional classroom? To my surprise, I am actually okay with this learning online exclusively. It is not as hard as I thought it would be but there are a few things that I wish I could change but I must keep in mind that if I have to adjust to the change and am unfamiliar with it, that maybe…just maybe…the professor is too. It is great that MOST of my professors record the class sessions and email it out to the class. It really helps, not only for the ones that could not connect, but also helps us because we can replay it as much as needed. This is why I am happy I choose to do my blog on “Digital Communication”.

Artificial Intelligence

The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) over the last 70 years has definitely made an impact on our society. What began as an exploration of just problem solving and symbolic methods has evolved to mimicking humans and now robots, driverless vehicles, etc..

To me, AI will eventually replace most human jobs. The reason I say this is because they have already replaced many and will continue to do so as time goes on. And it is happening rapidly. Also, the fact that humans tend to miss details that computers/robots do not and will not. Then you got the fact that AI needs only to be taught things ONCE. Where humans need to be taught most things over and over and still will not get all details nor will they remember everything. Furthermore, it is ideal financially, for the company owners.

What I learned from the AI & Hotel Industry video is that artificial intelligence is taking over. Our lives were simple and easy, but today with modern technology rapidly growing our lives has been relying more and more on technology. The interaction with one another has become fewer and fewer, eventually, technology will eliminate face-to-face all together. Most, if not all humans will lose their jobs to an AI robot. The effect AI will eventually make in or before 2030 is astronomical, actually before 2030.

What I learned about AI & the Trucking Industry video is that there are not enough truck drivers to keep up with the number of deliveries needed to keep up with people’s demands and needs. This has made some companies turn to the idea of driverless trucks. With that, I believe that ALL truck drivers will eventually lose their jobs. I believe this will happen by 2030. And this will be devastating for the drivers and their families. There will be no career in that field because if they have driverless trucks, they will have AI robots in the office as well.

What I have learned from AI & the Farming Industry is that it will have the same effect as I have mentioned in both the AI & Hotel Industry and AI & the Trucking Industry. This world will eventually be run by artificial intelligence in every way. Society as we know it will be DOMED, possibly before 2030. My career? By then my career will be taken over by robots.

The types of technologies/services that I envision seeing related to AI will be as I have stated above. Technology will be the future, in fact, it is already but it will worsen and I fear what and how people will deal with it. Not only deal with it but how interaction with humans will eventually be at a bare minimum. The reason I say this is because look at how AI is already replacing our jobs, eventually they will replace us as well. People will become more and more depressed, suicidal, violent, and I am sure unheard of behaviors will evolve.

Then you have the way our food is being made and rushed, which makes me think that it has something to do with this present crisis, the coronavirus. There is a reason for me to believe that because before when things were raised naturally we did not have all these diseases. With all the alterations that scientists and certain farmers are rushing production and scientists are genetically duplicating DNA in/for many things, I believe it has doomed humans.

As far as technology goes, AI will take over everything and everyone!!!

Digital Footprint

What is digital footprint? Digital footprints is a bunch of data that you make while using the Internet, such as the websites that you visit, the emails that you send, and all the information you send to online services.

Digital footprints are created by entering data through the internet, sending email, and sending information via online services. For example, when you visit websites and log in, the web server also logs your IP address in which identifies your Internet service provider. That is not all they get, they also get an approximate point of your location. They also get a more personal aspect of your digital footprint with your search history which is saved in your search engine when you log in.

Corporations use your digital footprints in many different ways and reasons. They use it for identity protection, digital identity, privacy protection, digital footprints, to identify you, transactions, marketing, and last but not least, identity theft.

If your digital footprint is negative and/or not friendly it may change the way people react to you, people may even think less of you. Not only that, people may not want to introduce themselves to you. We must remember that it is important to keep in mind that your digital footprint doesn’t only affect you, it also affects everyone around you too.

Here are some strategies to creating positive digital footprints; fully understand digital footprint, self check your digital footprints, clean your footprints, pay close attention to private policies, continuously track your digital footprints.

My name is Christine Gaudette, I am a 57 years old non-traditional student. I am from Kane’ohe on the island of O’ahu. My interests are helping people and getting educated. This has been a journey for me. The reason I say this is because when I was in school, I did not attend school at all. I had others doing my work for me while I spent my days surfing, selling drugs, and fighting with others. So, I truly did not know what a classroom looked like until I became a student at Leeward Community College. It was at this time I got a rude awakening, meaning I found out that I had to do my own work and there was no one to do my work for me like in the past. Also, I realized that I was actually capable of doing my own work and I was actually only cheating myself of a proper education. When I first came to Leeward Community College I had to take a placement test, my score projected that I had a 2.6 GPA, after completing my first semester of college, my GPA increased to 3.0 and I was overwhelmed with excitement and joy because I realized that I was capable of doing the work. College life is not easy, there is a lot of studying involved, but I tell you it is worth it.  My second semester really helped to confirm that I made the best choice in life of returning to school after over 38 years because I completed my semester with all “A’s”. This I definitely know that I would not have been able to accomplish without God in my life. All the glory belongs to God!!!

In 2018, one of my friends was talking about how she really enjoyed coming here to Leeward Community College Wai’anae and how encouraging everyone is here, so she actually talked me into attending. I began Spring 2018 and lo and behold, she was right, I actually fell in love with Leeward Community College. It made me really regret not attending school when I was younger. Now that I am here at Leeward Community College Wai’anae I am actually fascinated to learn all that I can. The friendly staff and AMAZING Professors here make me WANT to come to school. I know I have to be present at every class, do ALL my homework, etc. to get good grades, but here at Leeward Community College Wai’anae, I WANT TO, I look forward to coming, it’s just a great school, there is no other like it.

At the beginning, my goal was to just get my certificate/associates in Social Work, but after my first semester I said to myself, “why stop there?”.  Now I have changed my major to Psychology, instead of just going for an Associate’s degree I am now going for my Masters/Ph.D…

This is my third semester and the classes I am taking are ICS 101, HSER 140, Speech 251, and Theater 221. I am still loving it! I highly recommend everyone to enroll here at Leeward Community College Wai’anae because if the professors, staff members, and the environment can make an impact on me and keep me wanting to come back, this has to be an awesome school, not to mention, I have learned so much and in many different ways.

With all that I have accomplished in this short period and all that I planned academically, I can see myself accomplishing all my goals. My vision of being a psychologist is looking brighter and brighter every day. Thanks to my Lord and savior, the Professors and Staff at Leeward Community College Wai’anae, and the family-oriented environment they have created.
